Windows 10 Free Upgrade Right Now Tutorial

Today is July 29, the day Microsoft launches final version of Windows 10. However unlike previous versions of Windows, Microsoft is doing a phase rollout of Windows 10 upgrade, which means not everyone will get the update on the same day.

But as they, where there’s a will, there is a way. And so if you are in the same boat as many others whose Windows 10 upgrade hasn’t automatically started downloading yet, you can follow the tutorial below to force Windows Update to download the update for you right now. I have personally tested this and can confirm it worked on my Surface Pro 3. There’s no reason why it won’t work for anyone of you on any other computer running Windows.

How to check if your PC isn’t already downloading the Windows 10 upgrade? Navigate to C:\ drive and see if it has a folder named $Windows.~BT (you may have to enable Hidden items to check this). If it is there, you are all set, but if it isn’t there, you will need to follow the instructions below to force Windows 10 downloading.

Ready? Lets do this!

Pre-requesites:

Must be running genuine copy of either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
Must have all the previous updates installed from Windows Update.
Make sure your PC meets all other Windows 10 requirements.

Step 1: Make sure you have reserved your free copy of Windows 10. If you haven’t done this already, you can do this by getting the March update, labelled as KB3035583 from here.

Step 2: Run Windows Update, and make sure you are set to receive updates automatically.

Step 3: Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and delete everything in this folder. Don’t worry, it wont ruin your system.

Step 4: Now run Command Prompt utility in Administrator mode. Simply search for ‘cmd’ from Start Menu/Screen, right click, and then click on run as administrator.

Step 5: Type this command and press enter: wuauclt.exe /updatenow.

Step 6: Now after a few minutes, check for updates in Windows Update. You should now see Windows 10 being downloaded on your PC. The size of this download will vary depending on the version of Windows you are currently running. Download time will also vary depending on the type and speed of Internet connection you have.

Step 7: Once the download is complete, it will start ‘Preparing for installation’ after which you can install the update.

Microsoft’s “A Year in the Like” Transforms Facebook Timeline Into Full-Screen Cinematic Experience

Facebook is in the news a lot recently, with the social network splashing the cash to acquire photo sharing platform, Instagram. One of the reasons the company was in the news last year, the new Timeline feature, is now the subject of a Microsoft-made website, too.

Facebook’s new Timeline feature has caused a few people to fall both sides of the love and hate barrier, though few can argue that the overall effect is not a visually pleasing one. It really isn’t, try sharing a link on your Timeline without messing up a couple of times, yup, we’ve all been there.

Microsoft has now launched a website of its own which plugs straight into Facebook’s new Timeline feature, taking the raw data and reproducing it in an even more visual way than we are used to. The result is a full page view of everything that a user has added to their Timeline, and it looks clean and beautiful.

Users can scrub through their entire Timeline via a bar at the bottom of the page, allowing them to flick through time and see the content that is associated with particular dates.

Clicking any of the floating comments will display associated images and comments added by any of your friends. What you are effectively left with is an interesting, visually appealing way to browse through your entire timeline. Whether users will really gain much other than a different way of seeing the same content they can find on Facebook’s own website, we’re not sure, but as the whole thing is free; we don’t see any real reason not to give it a whirl.

You can also create a short movie that will encompass your timeline data, and it can be customized to include or exclude certain friends should you so desire. Again, it may not be particularly useful, but we are sure some will find it interesting.

In order to get all this Timeline action, users will need to give the site access to their Facebook accounts. You could probably revoke access after the initial novelty has worn off, too, should Facebook security be something you worry about. We can’t see the likes of Microsoft abusing your Facebook account, though.

An iPhone User Tries Nokia’s Lumia 800 For 14 Days

There’s a lot of talk right now about Nokia and its Windows Phone 7 handsets. Specifically, it is the newly released and much hyped Lumia 900 which is seeing most of the headlines and clicks right now.

The handset itself is expected, or at least hoped, to signal a return to form for Nokia and to offer Microsoft a way back into the minds of US smartphone buyers who have been happy to lean towards iOS, Android or even BlackBerry over the last few years.

While the Lumia 900 is the subject of many a review right now – not all of them good, just ask The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky about that – that isn’t the model I’m here to tell you about. I’m here to tell you about the handset that brought Windows Phone 7 to the world of Nokia, and is currently the top-of-the-line Lumia that is available outside the United States.

Those paying attention will have realized I am talking about the Lumia 800, Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 device. Arguably the Lumia 900′s older brother, the handset has one big thing in common with the Lumia 900 – it was seen as nothing short of the second coming of Nokia, and just the same as the 900, it disappointed while still being a very good smartphone.

But let me back up a second before I qualify that statement.

First off, and to put everything into context, there is something you should know about me. If you’ve been reading closely over the last year or so, then you’re probably already aware that I own an iPhone. I’ve had every iPhone bar the 3GS, and I’m very happy with my current 4S. I like iPhones.

I’ve had Android phones in the past, too. The most recent was a Nexus S from Samsung, and it was OK. Not great, just OK.

I’ve even had Windows Phone 7 handsets before, with the HTC HD7 the pick of the bunch. Again, it was OK.

So, I waiting for the Lumia 800 to arrive with great intrigue. The HD7 had whetted my appetite for Windows Phone 7, because in all honesty, I enjoyed the OS. It was a breath of fresh air, especially on the back of my Nexus S experience. The hardware, however, left a lot to be desired.

When the Lumia 800 arrived I decided to go full bore with my little experiment. My SIM card came out of my iPhone and went into the Lumia, with the aim of it not returning to its home for a full two weeks. Off I set on my mini adventure, Nokia wunderphone in hand.

Now this is not going to be a full, 5,000 word review of the Lumia 800 because, frankly, everyone’s read enough of them since the handset’s original release. It got good reviews for good hardware, but the software was lacking. This sounded like the opposite of my HTC HD7 experience, so I was looking forward to spending some time with the Nokia.

The first few days were pretty good. The novelty factor was certainly in full effect, and I can honestly say this is the best Windows Phone 7 handset I have ever used. I would possibly go so far as to say it is better than any Android handset I have ever used, but seeing as I’ve not had my hands on any of the latest Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones yet, then I’m not going to imply that stands for much.

My real problem, and I feared this would happen, is that it’s not my iPhone.

I’ll explain that a little further. Having used iPhones for years, I have built up an almost symbiotic relationship with it. I know all my apps, I know how they work, and they work how I want them to. I have an app that will allow me to do just about anything that I could do with my MacBook, should the need arise, including managing a home server over SSH, FTP or VNC. There may be apps that do such things for Windows Phone 7, but I didn’t find any good ones, if any at all.

That may sound like a very narrow example, but it is an example nonetheless. My main issue, working my way through those two weeks without an iPhone, was that I just didn’t feel as if I was connected to everything. I missed Instagram. The Facebook and Twitter apps felt alien to the point of not wanting to use them. These Live Tiles I hear so much about didn’t do what I had hoped and the Metro interface grew old once the novelty of all those transitions wore off. In short, the whole experience felt gimmicky, but with little substance.

All this is a real shame. Nokia’s hardware is undoubtedly gorgeous, and the Lumia 900 is no different by all accounts. The issue is that despite throwing itself into Windows Phone 7, Nokia is still lacking a real mobile OS that will claw people away from iOS and Android. Apps speak volumes for a platform these days, and Windows Phone 7 just doesn’t have them in large enough quantities and of enough quality to really compete.

The end result was a disappointing one. I didn’t get through my two weeks with the Lumia without having to admit defeat and return to my iPhone. As much as I wanted to love the Lumia 800, I just couldn’t live with it, and that was the end of that.

One thing that is worth nothing though, is that I am what people would call a power user. Most smartphone owners won’t be doing the things I do on a daily basis, and with that in mind I do wonder whether Windows Phone 7 may have a home in the market yet, just not in my home. Less nerdy types may enjoy all those transitions, and Nokia’s own apps add value to be sure, just not for me.

To be clear here, the problem I have with the Nokia Lumia 800 is not so much with the handset itself, but with the software. Windows Phone 7 has improved greatly since the early days, but has it improved enough to really compete? I fear not.

If you are a Windows Phone 7 fan though, the Lumia 800, and I suspect the 900 too, are well worth a look. If you’re an iOS or Android owner though, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.

And that’s the real shame.

The Next-Gen Xbox Will Be Graphical Powerhouse, Will Feature Multiple GPUs For Even More Intense Gaming

The internet is once again abuzz with news and rumors surrounding the replacement to the Xbox 360. Despite Microsoft refusing to admit that the console is on its way sooner rather than later, the gaming community is currently falling over itself to suggest what the next Xbox may look like and, more importantly, what features it may sport.

Being called the Xbox 720 more and more – if that’s what it’s called, we’ll eat our collective hats – the new machine is rumored to have anything from a new, Microsoft-only disc drive to not having a drive at all. We’ve really run the whole gamut of possibilities of late, but that hasn’t stopped two new suggests cropping up over the last day or so.

As far as graphical prowess goes, the new Xbox could potentially be a real powerhouse. One rumor claims that Microsoft’s new console will feature two separate GPUs, which apparently will work completely independently, rather than working in tandem ala Crossfire or SLI. The maker of the rumored GPUs is as yet unknown, but Microsoft has been known to use NVIDIA for such duties in the past.

Whatever the chips, a new Xbox would no doubt offer a considerable step up from current Xbox 360 standards, which we have to say isn’t exactly looking out of date just yet, despite the machine’s age. Microsoft will obviously want to kick things up a notch next time around, however.

The more interesting rumor surrounds internet connectivity for the unannounced machine.

Rumors of a disc-less Xbox originally came about because game developers are itching to find a way to reduce what it sees as rampant piracy. Downloadable games with no disc-based alternatives would all but eradicate such workaround for getting original content, but would also possibly face opposition from those without high-speed internet access. With that in mind, this latest rumor may seem a little odd: according to VG247, the next Xbox could require always-on internet in order to function. The reason? You guessed it, anti-illegal. What would happen to those that don’t have any internet connection where the Xbox lives is unclear, and let’s not forget, this is only a rumor at this point.

We all know that an internet-based console is on the way sooner rather than later, and with connections becoming the norm across the globe it’s possibly only a matter of time.

That’s how Steam works on the PC, after all.

These Special Edition Official Chrome Series Controllers For Xbox 360 Are A Must-Have

Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE’s Director of Programming, better known to gaming fans as Major Nelson, has showcased a limited edition range of Chrome Series wireless controllers set to launch in the middle of next month.

Consumers can choose from either blue, red or silver, and aside from the finish, will be exactly the same as the regular official controller. They will retail at $54.99, and Hryb also notes that color availability could vary depending on whereabouts you reside. Those interested are advised to check with local retail outlets for more specific information.

Since consoles tend to run for five years or more before being superseded, many special editions and offers such as these serve to keep things interesting among the demanding army of gamers. If you’re a fan of all things shiny and glossy, for example, you may want to invest in the limited edition glossy white Xbox 360 Kinect Family bundle announced last month. If, like many, you’re crazy for COD (no, not the delicious fish, but the billion dollar franchise that is Call Of Duty), then you may be swayed by the Modern Warfare 3 bundle released in conjunction with the latest record-breaking release.

Aside from having a rather enviable Gamerscore, Major Nelson has been overseeing Xbox LIVE for some eight years. With all the rumors flying around concerning the next installment to the Xbox series, we’ll certainly be keeping tabs on him for any hint of an update. At the moment, the consensus seems to be that Microsoft will introduce two new consoles – one focused on streamed content and entertainment, with another releasing some months/years thereafter to satisfy the appetite of the ardent gamer.

Until then, though, three shiny new controllers will be taking center stage. I like the red one, since it’s rather vibrant and bold, plus the silver one cuts a rather tacky chrome figure, in my opinion. The blue one is okay – if you like your controllers like you like your sports cars. Overall, we like the series wholeheartedly, it looks good and does indeed aims to add that missing flair to your gaming experience for a little price tag.

Hackers Can Steal Credit Card Information From Your Old Xbox, Experts Tell Us

Considering consumers pay such a high price in the stores for their gizmos and gadgets, they would be forgiven for thinking that the manufacturers of these high-end pieces of technology are doing all they can to ensure any data that passes through the product and associated services is as secure as it possibly can be. However, if recent research into the subject is anything to go by, then it would appear that this isn’t always the case, with sensitive data such as credit card details being easily accessible on Xbox 360 consoles through the use of widely available tools.

We all have heard the old advice of always removing the hard drive from a desktop computer when the time comes to eventually get rid of it or sell it through second hand channels. This type of advice is extremely common and serves to make sure that whoever may get their hands on that machine after you has no possible way of restoring any data that was once saved on the internal storage.

Rather disturbingly, it seems that if a second hand Xbox 360 console falls into the wrong hands, then the same type of sensitive data and personal information can also be extracted from the hard drive, even if the gadget has been restored to its factory settings before selling it on.

A research team at the Drexel University in Philadelphia have confirmed this by using some common tools to successfully interrogate a second-hand Xbox 360 console and got their hands on a set of personal data files. The team are also claiming that by allowing this to happen, Microsoft are wronging their faithful customers and should be implementing additional precautions to ensure that all data is secure, even after the console has been passed on.

When Microsoft inevitably releases a new and improved Xbox console, it stands to reason that they will want their current user base to go out and purchase the new hardware, leaving a large number of current generation devices being passed on through secondary sales channels. The Drexel research team believes that Microsoft should do more to protect those users, with Ashley Podhradsky saying:

Microsoft does a great job of protecting their proprietary information, but they don’t do a great job of protecting the user’s data.

Offering a small piece of advice, Podhradsky recommends that before a console is sold on or thrown away, the user should remove the internal hard drive and entirely wipe the contents using software designed for this exact purpose, such as DBAN or alternatives. Using such software to delete data is perhaps common knowledge to a lot of hardcore computer users, but for those who enjoy casual gaming and have provided credit card information for Xbox LIVE subscriptions; this report could prove to be an eye opener.
